// pole position

This photo was taken in North Canterbury in the late 1920s. The men pictured were putting in the power poles and lines for electricity for the North Canterbury Power Board, which they did until the Depression. One of the men – or perhaps the person taking it – is William Frederick Ainsley Horrell, the father of Alison Smitheram, who sent in this photo. William used to ride round on a motorcycle with a long ladder attached, to check the lines for damage.
