What to watch this week

– James Croot

MasterChef: Dessert Masters (Tomorrow, 7.30pm, TVNZ 2)

The beloved Australian reality competition’s latest attempt at a spin-off involves 10 of the country’s elite pastry pioneers, chefs and chocolatiers. Familiar faces among those going head-to-head to impress judges Melissa Leong and Amaury Guichon and take home the $100,000 include Reynold Poernomo, Anna Polyviou, Kirsten Tibballs and Adriano Zumbo.

Prisoner’s Daughter (Tuesday, Prime Video)

Succession’s Brian Cox and Kate Beckinsale star in this drama about a former boxer and dying convict who tries to reconnect with his direct offspring and bond with a grandson (Christopher Convery) he’s never known. However, for Beckinsale’s Maxine, her father’s arrival adds to her growing troubles. “[Director Catherine] Hardwicke’s sharply drawn, slow-simmer domestic drama… has the cool vibe of an indie film from a generation ago, from the lived-in look of the Vegas sets to the authentic performances of the terrific cast,” wrote Chicago Sun-Times’ Richard Roeper.

Leave the World Behind (Friday, Netflix)

This sci-fi-infused thriller sees a couple’s Long Island holiday interrupted by two strangers and a mysterious blackout. The impressive cast includes Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali and Kevin Bacon. “A provocative, superbly acted action drama that combines big-hitting ambition and spectacle with just enough humour to temper the whole end-ofcivilisation meltdown scenario,” wrote The Observer’s Wendy Ide.
