Prince gets court deadline
Prince Andrew has been given a week to challenge an English judge’s ruling that he was correctly notified of a legal claim over allegations that he sexually assaulted a girl. A judge in the High Court in London said this week she had accepted a request for service of proceedings on the prince by lawyers acting for American woman Virginia Giuffre. High Court officials said: ‘‘Lawyers for Prince Andrew have indicated that they may seek to challenge the decision.’’ Giuffre has brought a civil claim against Andrew in a New York court, but there had been a dispute over whether he was properly served with the legal papers. Prior to the High Court application, Giuffre’s representatives had attempted to serve proceedings on the prince by handing them to a policeman at the gates of his home in Windsor Great Park. Andrew’s lawyer contended that doing so did not constitute proper service under English civil law. Giuffre is suing Andrew for alleged sexual assault when she was a teenager. He has consistently denied the allegations.
